Schools Around Edmonton: A Home Buyer's Guide by Community

Which division serves each community, the schools in each, and how to confirm the school for an address before you buy.

Photo is illustrative.

Short answer: In Alberta, the school your child attends is set by your home address and decided by the school division, not by the builder or the listing. Every community around Edmonton has a public division and a Catholic division, and boundaries change as neighbourhoods grow. Before you buy, confirm the designated school for the exact address with the division. I check it with you on every home we look at.

How school areas work when you buy a home

Four things that catch buyers off guard.

The address decides

Each division draws attendance areas. Two homes a block apart can have different designated schools, so check the exact address.

Boundaries move

Divisions review attendance areas as communities grow and new schools open. A brochure or an old listing can be out of date.

New areas wait for schools

A school site in the plan isn't a school. It's built once the Province funds it. Until then, students usually travel to another neighbourhood.

Programs such as French Immersion, sports academies, AP and IB are offered at select schools and can have their own rules for who gets in and whether busing is provided. Ask the division about the program and about transportation for your address.

Schools in each community

The same school notes as my community guides, in one place. For Edmonton, use the Edmonton Public and Edmonton Catholic school locators, since the designated school varies by neighbourhood.

What I check on schools when you buy

I'm a REALTOR®, not an educator, so I don't rank schools. I make sure you know what you're buying into.

The designated school

For the exact address, in both the public and Catholic systems, confirmed with the division and not taken from the listing.

What's planned nearby

School sites in the area plan, whether they're funded, and what's being built beside the home in the meantime.

Getting there

Walking route or bus, and what a school next door means for traffic, parking and noise at drop-off time.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find out which school my child would attend?

The designated school depends on the home address, and the school division decides it. Use the division’s school locator or call the division office with the exact address, and ask them to confirm it in writing before you remove conditions on a purchase.

Can school boundaries change after I buy?

Yes. Divisions review attendance areas as neighbourhoods grow and as new schools open. For example, Parkland School Division moved Tonewood and Easton in Spruce Grove to different schools starting in 2023-24. Check the current designation, not an old listing or brochure.

Does a new neighbourhood have its own school?

Often not at first. A site may be set aside in the plan, but a school is only built once the Province funds it. Until then students usually travel to a school in another neighbourhood, sometimes by bus. Treat a planned school as a plan, not a promise.

Which school divisions serve the communities around Edmonton?

Parkland School Division and Evergreen Catholic serve Spruce Grove and Stony Plain. Elk Island Public and Elk Island Catholic serve Sherwood Park, Ardrossan and Fort Saskatchewan. St. Albert Public and Greater St. Albert Catholic serve St. Albert. Black Gold School Division serves Beaumont, Leduc and Devon, with STAR Catholic in Beaumont and Leduc and Evergreen Catholic in Devon. Edmonton has Edmonton Public Schools and Edmonton Catholic Schools.

Do you rank schools?

No. I am a REALTOR, not an educator. I can tell you which schools serve an address, what is planned nearby and how the school affects resale, and I will point you to the division for programs and results.

Buying with a school in mind?

Text me first at 780-220-8449, or book a 20-minute call. Tell me the school or program you want and I'll show you which neighbourhoods and homes fit. No pressure.
